3view’s Freeview HD PVR: What more could anyone want?
The strength of the brands of companies like Sony and Panasonic has always been down to the strong technical development that the brands brought. Invest in the technology to build the brand, and use the brand to invest in the technology. It was a virtuous circle. The difficulty was keeping ahead of other companies, who were equally keen to develop their brands by finding the next technology. Fortunately, with hundreds of technicians and designers, companies like Sony could keep ahead of the game. The problem is, that today’s technology does not need the technical input. Instead of resistors, capacitors and the like that need to be carefully arranged electronically and logically, today all that is needed is one silicon chip. There is a lot less variability in the technology of all but the highest end equipment. This does mean that consumers do not know which brand to go for as before, but otherwise is a good step. Instead of a few consumer brands, there is a proliferation of brands using the same hardware, or ‘silicon’, and so providing much more choice and often customer focus.
Take 3View’s Freeview HD PVR. This is not a well known brand, yet the product is exactly what is needed and the price is well within expectations. Firstly, it provides for all your TV watching needs. It gives a 320/500GB hard-drive and twin tuners for “watch and record” functionality. (Interestingly, it is worth noting that the tuners for this box are actually from Sony.) Then it also gives you all the Internet side of television. Missed the first episode of the new series of Mad Men (Yes!) watch it on the built in iPlayer software or surf YouTube for your entertainment. Want to network with friends on the programme you are just watching using Twitter or Facebook. Otherwise, just browse the Internet for spoilers on the next series of Dollhouse using the Opera 10 browser. This is really a good box.

Currently due to go into production in February, it should be available in March priced at £299, when the full specifications are provided – Both 500GB and 320GB are mentioned. This could be the machine to go for if you are looking for a PVR or to upgrade from your Sony. Those are words I thought I’d not say, ‘upgrade from your Sony’ to a brand you’ve not heard of, but gives you all the functionality your Sony doesn’t.
