The 8Gb Eye-Fi Pro X2, with virtual unlimited storage, is available for pre-order today for $149

The 8GB Eye-Fi Pro X2, unveiled at CES, is available today for pre-order. If you’ve missed what an Eye-Fi card is, it is a memory card that functions like any other SDHC memory card for your camera, with the added capability of sending your photos and videos through a Wi-Fi network right to your home computer or any online site you choose. Pretty cool huh? The cards come is an assorted variety but the newest and biggest is the Pro X2. This new chip has bigger memory and Class 6 performance for speedier read/write, and with an 802.11n radio it has increased Wi-Fi range and faster loading. Another new feature is “Endless Memory mode, which enables the Eye-Fi card to automatically make space available after photos and videos are uploaded”. What this means is that despite claiming to have 8GB of storage, if you choose the option the chip will clear photos out as you upload them making room for more recording, in effect giving you endless memory. For anyone that truly depends on photos and videos for their livelihood, or hobby addiction, this chip is a must have. And it is cheaper than buying a wireless camera and lets you swap it to any camera you want.

To recap, through Wi-Fi, the Eye-Fi Pro X2 wirelessly uploads JPEG, RAW images and videos from the camera to your computer and one of 25 online sites, such as Flickr, Picasa or Facebook. The Pro X2 also automatically geotags photos. Certainly this is a huge plus when touring Italy and you come home and just cannot tell one cathedral from another, or a cruise where all the beaches look the same.

Also available now is the new version of the Eye-Fi Center desktop software for managing your photos, with drag and drop capabilities. With it you can share photos and videos on different sites and you can even bring in legacy photos (aka those not shot with an Eye-Fi) to the software.
