Perfect for the golfer Dad: Golfshot GPS on an iPhone
Sick of putting another box of golf balls under the Christmas tree? Try an iPhone app sure to be a big hit with your golfer, Golfshot, a GPS and scorecard app, now in release 1.4 which adds 11 new languages and more than 25,000 fully mapped golf courses worldwide. The languages are: English, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Italian, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish and French. In Connecticut alone I found 173 courses in the database including my local town course.

Golfshot costs just $29.95, with no additional monthly or annual fees and is cheaper than a decent box of golf balls. What it does is provide a “rangefinder that shows distances to greens (this helps you decide what club to use), up to 40 professionally mapped targets per hole, and a GPS aerial view option”. In addition it scores your game and gives you in-depth stat tracking and analysis of each individual’s game, which is then sent to www.golfshot.com. The PGA tour style statistics it tracks are: fairways hit, missed left & right, greens in regulation, recovery scrambling, sand saves, putts per hole and per GIR, scoring averages on par 3’s, 4’s and 5’s, scoring percentages, comparisons against friends, Tiger, or anyone. And the clubs measured include woods, hybrids, irons and wedges. All this sounds very important and probably is highly desirable information to someone that knows what they are talking about. Two ways to package this is to preload it on that iPhone you are giving for Christmas, or get Dad an Apps gift card and wrap it in an old golf ball box for a real surprise. Or if it’s a present for you just download it now and you will be all set for that Florida vacation. Just remember to leave your clubs at home and rent/borrow some there—the $100 to take them on the plane is just NOT worth it.
