Spotify says "This isn't the Android you're listening for."

Droidify plays Spottify for AndroidSpottify is the legitimate way to listen to free music. All of it. And now, you can listen to Spotify music with an Android device.

There is some software that runs Spotify on Android, and it (sort of) works; you can watch a (fairly detailed) demo online.

But despite several reports suggesting that this is Droidify, it isn't. For a start, Droidify was coded by a Swede and - as you'll hear from the YouTube clip, this is a French product.

Either way, that hasn't pleased everybody. For example, Duncan George moaned: "It's not an official one. It's called Droidify and has been put together by a Swedish coder who got bored of waiting for the legitimate version."

That's a problem in this sense: it streams music fine, yes! - but it seems that it won't allow you to play the music offline. That's no threat to any iPod. The French version doesn't even stream properly, say downloaders (yes, it's free).

George quoted a Spotify representative, who poured rather cold water on all these projects.

First, says Spotify, you can't just watch it online free. You'd need a paid-for "premium" account on Spotify. That's quite understandable, because Spotify gets its revenue from advertising, and the Droidify program doesn't let the adverts run. Neither does the French imitation, say reviewers.

There will be an "official" Android application in due course, says Spotify.

As to "when?" it's pretty clear that we'll all have to wait. The iPhone version, promised some time back, is still not available, and Apple hasn't yet given Spotify the go-ahead to write it. It remains to be seen what is actually happening on the official Android web site (and of course, Android Markets isn't readable from a computer - you need a handset running Android).

But the mystery remains, because if you look at the video, you'll see, clearly, that the screen shows the word "Droidify" on the application which is running. [FX: Twilight Zone music..]
